History & Design
The U.S. Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle in 1986 following authorization by the Liberty Coin Act, establishing it as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Since its release, the Silver Eagle has become one of the most widely purchased silver bullion coins in the world, with hundreds of millions of ounces sold to investors and collectors globally.
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947 and widely regarded as one of the most celebrated designs in U.S. coinage history.
From 1986 through mid-2021, the reverse displayed a heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti. Beginning in 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced the Type 2 reverse, designed by Emily Damstra, depicting a bald eagle landing with an oak branch. This updated reverse incorporates modern engraving techniques while maintaining strong national symbolism.
Pricing & Liquidity
American Silver Eagle coins typically command higher premiums than other high-mintage government silver coins due to strong retail demand and U.S. Mint production constraints. Their widespread recognition and government backing also support strong secondary-market liquidity, often resulting in competitive buyback pricing.

American Silver Eagle coins can be shipped securely and discreetly, with full insurance, tracking, and adult signature requirements. Kitco also offers allocated, non-bank silver storage, where coins are fully insured, segregated, and recorded as your direct property.
