The American Gold Buffalo is the United States Mint’s official 24-karat gold bullion coin, first issued in 2006. It was the first .9999 fine gold coin ever produced by the U.S. government and carries a $50 U.S. legal-tender face value. History & Design
Introduced in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo was created to meet investor demand for a pure 24k gold bullion coin backed by the U.S. government. Unlike the American Gold Eagle, which is struck in 22k gold, the Gold Buffalo contains .9999 fine gold. The design is adapted from James Earle Fraser’s iconic Buffalo Nickel, originally issued from 1913 to 1938.
