The ancient tradition of decorated skulls are began with indigenous peoples in the south of Mexico. In Day of the Dead celebrations, the spirits of the deceased are said to reunite with their families for one day each year. Elaborate skulls are made of sugar then decorated by hand and displayed on decorative altars, accompanied by food and drink. A decorative skull represents the soul of a departed loved one, and the festivities honor the return of a particular spirit. With its popularity growing around the world, the Day of the Dead has evolved into a joyful cultural event celebrating the memories of the departed.
To make a true sugar skull, the process is extremely labor intensive and only small batches can be prepared. In the same way, the 10 oz pure Silver Bars in Kitco’s .999 silver Skull series have been custom designed, and are minted in only limited quantities.
Canadian artist Kristiana Vellucci worked with the Kitco design team to create this highly collectible skull series of 10 oz Silver Bars. The unique appearance and decoration of these fantastic silver bars was inspired by the tradition of sugar skulls in Mexican folk art. Sunshine Mint in the USA modeled the bars, providing a combination of polished and frosted finishes before striking the 10 oz Silver Skull bars. Surrounding the central skull, a mirrored filigree finish reflects the light, as do the mirrored teeth in this design. The black painted eyes and nose provide a simple yet striking look for the 10 oz Silver Bar - Original Skull .999.
