Tanzanite is prized for its scarcity and distinctive cool color. Ranging from a pale violet-blue to a deeper shade of blueish purple, the stone also appears to change color depending on the angle and the type of the light hitting the stone. Like with the other pure silver coins in this series, the December birthstone silver coin features a genuine Swarovski® crystal that represents the tanzanite stone.

While it’s official scientific name is blue-violet zoisite, it was dubbed tanzanite by Tiffany & Co for the country in which it was discovered in the late 1960’s, Tanzania. Tanzanite is actually solely found in Tanzania and is mined in a very small 2 km wide mining area near the Merelani Hills, making this birthstone extra unique.
