Introduced in 2005 under the Presidential $1 Coin Act, the 1 oz Gold American Buffalo is the US Mint’s first pure gold (.9999 fine) bullion coin. Struck at the Mint’s West Point, NY facility, these coins are made exclusively of gold mined in the USA.
The coin’s design is based on one of America’s most popular circulation coins, the “Indian Head” or “Buffalo Nickel” that was introduced in 1913. The original Type 1 design was executed by the noted sculptor James Earle Fraser, who was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the designer of the coin that inspired the American Eagle.
The portrait of a proud Native American male on the obverse surface pays homage to America’s first inhabitants and their rich history. The powerful American Buffalo that appears on the reverse surface of the coin honors the fauna and landscape of the great American West and the pioneering spirit that conquered it. Amidst these heroic emblems are inscriptions of the coin’s weight, face value and year of mintage.
The weight, content and purity of Gold American Buffalo coins are guaranteed by the Government of the United States of America.
*Although this product has never been circulated, the soft nature of the .9999 purity does make this product susceptible to minor imperfections during the minting and transportation cycle. There is no guarantee associated with the grade of the coin, other than it being current year and uncirculated.
