Colorful decorated skulls are an ancient tradition of many indigenous peoples in the south and center of Mexico. The tradition is closely tied with the Day of the Dead celebrations, where the spirits of the deceased are said to reunite with their families for one day each year. Food, drink and festivities are planned, while elaborate skulls are made of sugar then decorated by hand and displayed on decorative altars. Each decorative skull represents the departed soul of a loved one, and honors the return of a particular spirit. Growing in popularity around the world, the Day of the Dead has become a joyful a tradition of celebrating the memories of departed loved ones
True sugar skulls are extremely labor intensive and are made only in small batches. Likewise, the 10 oz pure Silver Bars in Kitco’s .999 silver Skull series have only limited mintage and were custom designed. Only 250 bars were manufactured in the first minting.
In creating this highly collectible skull series of 10 oz Silver Bars, the Kitco design team called upon the talents of Canadian artist Kristiana Vellucci. Inspiration for the unique appearance and decoration of these silver bars came from the tradition and color of sugar skulls in Mexican folk art. The well-respected Sunshine Mint in the USA modelled a combination of frosted and polished finishes before striking the 10 oz Silver Skull bars at their state of the art facility. A filigree in mirror finish surrounds the central skull, and finally, advanced technology was used to apply the delicate color to the 10 oz Silver Bar - Cross Skull .999.
