This is the 2nd bar in Kitco’s Silver Bar Skull series, and is distinguished by its delicate floral design with central yellow rose.
The tradition of colorful decorated skulls is an ancient one, used by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico. It is closely tied with the celebration of the Day of the Dead, where traditional beliefs have the spirits of the deceased reuniting with their families for one day a year. Festivities, food and drink are prepared on decorative altars, including skulls made of sugar, which are then elaborately decorated by hand. Each decorative skull design is created to represent the departed soul and to honor the return of a particular spirit. The Day of the Dead has become a joyful a tradition of celebrating the memories of departed loved ones, and is growing in popularity around the world.
True sugar skulls are very labor intensive and only made in small batches. Similarly, the 10 oz Silver Bars in this .999 pure silver Skull series were custom designed and have only limited mintage. (Only 250 units were manufactured this year).
To create the skull series of highly collectible 10 oz Silver Bars, the Kitco design team worked with Canadian artist Kristiana Vellucci. The unique appearance and decoration of these silver bars was inspired by the tradition and color found in Mexican folk art and sugar skulls. The artistic team at the well-respected Sunshine Mint in the USA modelled a combination of frosted and polished finishes to strike the 10 oz Silver Skull bars. Mirror finished filigree surrounds the central skull design, and the latest in minting technology was used to carefully apply the color finishes to these incredible 10 oz fine silver bars.
